Cold therapy has been utilized extensively in the field of orthopedic surgery to provide continuous temerature control following acute injury or surgery to decrease blood flow to the area and reduce pain, muscle spasm, swelling and inflammation.
Moist heat therapy temporarily relieves chronic pain, muscle spasm or stiffness, improves flexibility, and increases circulation by penetrating and dilating blood vessels.

Cold therapy provides edema reduction by causing vaso-constriction of blood vessels (reducing blood flow into the affected tissue), slowing down of the patient’s metabolism at the operative site (at the cellular level) and decreases vascular permeability (the amount of fluid allowed to enter into the affected area).
Cold therapy provides temporary pain reduction. By applying continuous cold therapy to the affected area, the nerve impulses that deliver the sensation of pain to the patient are slowed down and as such the patient’s sensation of pain is lowered considerably.
